I knew that I wanted to be an attorney from an early age. I recall one of my Junior High teachers looked at me once when I was arguing with him about the meaning of some book we were reading, and asked, “have you thought of becoming an attorney?” Well, I hadn’t, but that was the beginning of a journey which eventually took me to law school in Spokane, Washington where I earned my law degree as a Gonzaga Zag (not that I really ever paid attention to it, but they definitely have a good basketball team!). When I was done I wanted to come home to Colorado so I could be around my family (I’m a native) and back in my mountains. My first job after becoming licensed in 1997 was as a Deputy District Attorney in Trinidad, Colorado. I worked there for three years and learned how to do trial work in the county and juvenile courts. In 2000 I got an offer to become a Deputy District Attorney here in Colorado Springs and I jumped at it to be closer to my family, and I fell in love with the area the first time I drove around looking for places to live. Initially, I worked in the Juvenile Division but was quickly transitioned into handling adult felony cases (the most serious crimes) in the District Courts of El Paso County. Within a few years I was promoted to management where I and another supervisor (who is now a district court judge) trained attorneys that were being promoted to the district courts. While my primary responsibility was training new attorneys, my other responsibilities involved charging and prosecuting homicide cases. I enjoyed that work, but the threat of having your job taken away every time there was an election caused me to seek more stability by working for myself. In April of 2007 I left the DA’s office and became partners with Ken Jaray to form the Law Firm of Jaray & Webster, LLC. Ken had spent about 30 years working in Personal Injury and Workers’ Compensation law, and he was kind enough to take me under his wing and teach me the ins and outs of this area of the law. In 2013, Ken retired and I brought my wife, Emma Webster, into the business to open a family law side to the practice while I continued with the personal injury and workers’ compensation areas of practice. During this time period I also began participating heavily in the local El Paso County Bar Association. Initially I just volunteered to help produce the local lawyers’ telephone directory, but one thing led to another and the next thing I knew I was elected to be Treasurer of the local bar in about 2013. It was rewarding participating in the bar and in 2015, I was elected President of the El Paso County Bar Association and spent the next year leading the organization. In 2018, Emma and I decided to rename the firm to The Webster Law Firm, LLC, and we have continued our respective practices in the areas of personal injury, workers’ compensation and family law. We aren’t a big firm. We have two attorneys and an amazing staff which helps us to provide the best experience possible for clients. In my practice, I like to take a more personal approach by regularly meeting with clients to get updates so that I can understand what you go through. This allows me to more effectively communicate harms and losses (damages is the legal term) to insurers, and explain your rights and options to you (which I find helps clients in their healing as I firmly believe that the stress of this process can slow down recovery). While I spend more time with clients, I also try to avoid interrupting your lives as much as possible. To that end, we provide multiple methods for monthly meetings with me including telephonic, in person or via Zoom (thanks to Covid, we found Zoom to be invaluable). I leave the choice up to the client and the feedback we have gotten from clients is that the meeting options are something they really like and makes their experience in the legal world a little less intrusive into their lives. I also belong to professional organizations like the Colorado Trial Lawyer’s Association and the Workers’ Compensation Education Association. I find these groups to be invaluable (and in my opinion if any attorney you are considering is not a member of one of these organizations, you should look for another attorney) because it connects me with the combined knowledge of most of the attorneys who represent people who have been injured on the job or because of someone else’s carelessness. These organizations also work to get legislation passed which is beneficial to our clients (one example is called Made Whole - you can check that out in my blogs) and the People of Colorado as a whole. Beyond that, these organizations provide access to the newest legal theories either being tried against my clients, or which have been successful for other member’s clients because we all recognize that sharing what works for the benefit of our clients, benefits us all.
